Meet Our Makers

All of our makers are members of the Craft Potters Association and each of them have a story to tell.

Priscilla Mouritzen

Priscilla was born in Cape Town, South Africa and attended the School of Art in Durban before setting up her own ceramic studio in England in 1968. She spent a decade in England before moving to Denmark where she has lived and worked since.

Priscilla makes porcelain pinch pots with graphic surface etchings revealed in underglaze. Her monochrome pots are often wood-fired.

Jane Cairns

Jane’s work is about finding beauty in the ordinary. It’s about the small things and recognising the accidental poetry in the unnoticed and overlooked.  Living in the city, this is often found in apparently insignificant details of the built environment - the way a surface has weathered, the juxtaposition of materials, the sculptural qualities of found forms.

Timothy Copsey

The Peak District Pennine landscape and seasons are the backdrop to everything Timothy does. He makes pottery on the border between function and sculpture: in essence vases, bowls, bottles and cups, though these are really just what he calls 'serving suggestions'. His work is multiple-fired, often starting with the wood kiln and ending with lustres.

John Dawson

John discovered ceramics while still at school in his native New Zealand. He was also inspired by watching a neighbour throwing a pot on the wheel and that cemented the desire to learn more.  After attending night classes to learn the basic, he built a kiln and shed in the back garden to continue making and experimenting.

Bruce Chivers

“Chivers is an artist potter whose work shines with a flowing lyricism in which decoration is intrinsically linked to form but is equally linked to natural random processes of image formation of the kind favoured by the American Abstract Expressionists and the European ‘matter’ painters.” Peter Davies.

Matthew Chambers

Matthew Chambers specialises in ceramic sculptures constructed from multiple sections built on the potter’s wheel. Finished with integral colour, unglazed but polished, each piece expresses an abstract beauty through its depth, pattern, and repetition.
