Inspired by traditional Japanese pottery, this stoneware sculpture is hand-built with a slate base. It is textured with ripples of inclusions of natural materials, wood-fired in a chamber kiln, then decorated with beads. The piece is chiselled after firing to reveal the essence of the piece – the archetypal vessel of Martin’s imagination.

About this maker
Martin describes his work as ‘ Clay – Water – Wood – Fire – Space’. These five elements are synthesised to create a reversed trompe-l’œil type of work, seemingly excavated or revealed, and simultaneously diminishing the third dimension.
