Inspired by traditional Japanese pottery, this sculptural piece is hand-built with stoneware fragments of pots which have been wood-fired in a chamber kiln. The pieces are chiselled after firing and sandwiched between sheets of thick glass panels to reveal the essence of the piece – the archetypal vessels of Martin’s imagination.

About this maker
Martin describes his work as ‘ Clay – Water – Wood – Fire – Space’. These five elements are synthesised to create a reversed trompe-l’œil type of work, seemingly excavated or revealed, and simultaneously diminishing the third dimension.
