Inspired by traditional Japanese pottery, this stoneware sculptural piece is hand-built with a metal base. The wood-firing in a chamber kiln creates a trompe-l’oeil three-dimensionality. It is chiselled after firing to reveal the essence of the piece – the archetypal vessel of Martin’s imagination.

About this maker

Martin describes his work as ‘ Clay – Water – Wood –  Fire – Space’. These five elements are synthesised to create a reversed trompe-l’œil type of work, seemingly excavated or revealed, and simultaneously diminishing the third dimension.
