All of our makers are members of the Craft Potters Association and each of them have a story to tell.
Gilles makes a variety of functional and one –off thrown stoneware pieces. His forms are freely manipulated on the potter’s wheel, some are altered and joined to construct taller larger pieces, other have incised marks applied to the soft clay revealing a subtle and tactile quality to the work, carrying a sense of captured sculptural movement.
John comes from a family of engineers going back several generations, so it was natural for him to follow suit. However, he made an unenthusiastic engineer, and after several years teaching he went back to college and gained a place on the 3D course at Manchester College of Art where he was introduced to clay for the first time.
Marina was born in Toulon in the South of France and spent part of her childhood in the rich coastal plains of Gabon, before moving to Alsace near the Vosges mountains and then to England. Her immersion in different landscapes and cultures fostered a sense of curiosity towards the transience of existence, which continues to inform her creative practice. She studied sculpture at Falmouth School of Art and later did a two-year
City and Guilds in ceramics in Nottingham.
Craig was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He graduated with a Higher National Diploma in Ceramics at Harrow College, then gained a BA(Hons) Fine Art specialising in Ceramics at Portsmouth Polytechnic. He has taught extensively and became a professional member of the Craft Potters Association in 2005.
Susan was born and grew up in Cork, Ireland. In 1991 she received a Certificate with Merit from the Grennan Mill Craft School in Co. Kilkenny. From there she moved to Scotland and the Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1999 with a First Class Honours Degree in Design and Applied Arts and a Post Graduate Diploma in Ceramics in 2000. Susan exhibits widely in solo and group exhibitions in the UK, Ireland and abroad.
Despite specialising in making one-off slab-built pots during her college years, Ulla established herself as a ceramic jewellery maker for many years. She has however, returned to making individual sculptural pieces. The pots that she now makes are a playful take on classic container forms, particularly the bottle. The shapes have an animated, even anthropomorphic air about them and work well in pairs or in groups.
