Meet Our Makers

All of our makers are members of the Craft Potters Association and each of them have a story to tell.

Helen Beard

Helen Beard is a potter and illustrator and a people watcher at heart. She studied at the Edinburgh College of Art. After graduating, Helen was an apprentice with Edmund de Waal in London. She set up her own studio in 2004 in the London borough of Islington where she makes, draws, designs and sometimes teaches.

Annabel Faraday

Annabel was born in Germany and spent several years of her childhood in Egypt before coming to England in 1956. She discovered clay at Farnham Art School on Saturday morning classes in the early 1960s. After leaving school in 1967, she attended Winchester Art School, where she was introduced to conceptual art and concrete poetry, and then Croydon College of Art. She went on to gain a BA(Hons) in Sociology and a PhD in Lesbian History at Essex University, then introduced and taught Lesbian Studies at Birkbeck College for two years. In her early 40s, she returned to her first love of clay, as one of the initial students on the City Lit Ceramics Diploma course in 1989.

Wendy Lawrence

Wendy discovered clay on an art foundation course. She went on to study at the University of Central Lancashire in 1998, gaining a BA in 3D Design (Ceramics). Since her graduation, she has continued to teach ceramics and run workshops for schools, colleges and community groups. She has participated in symposiums and workshops in Britain, Europe and America.

Sotis Filippides

While still at school Sotis displayed a talent for art and developed a keen interest in three-dimensional art in particular. He later enrolled in a four-year degree course at the Athens School of Ceramics. After his degree he came to the UK

David Allnatt

David was born in South London and trained in Graphics and 3D design. After working in art education for many years, specialising in ceramics, he took early retirement to concentrate on his own work and established his own workshop in the Forest of Dean where he now produces a range of hand-built ceramics.

Verity Howard

Verity is a ceramic artist creating works that explore mystery, trigger memories, generate atmosphere and evoke a sense of place. She makes distinct bodies of work, taking inspiration from the landscape, history, and culture surrounding her in rural Herefordshire. Using clay as a medium for drawing and monoprinting, Verity creates sculptural, slab-built, ceramic forms. It is important to Verity that the form and surface of her work create a harmonious composition and are integral to her subject matter.
