Since 2000 Owen Thorpe has been producing ‘families’ of pots using recurring themes and he has been making bowls and plates with inscriptions. All his work is made using a soft stoneware, high fired with occasional further enamel firings.
Hajeong Lee Rogers grew up in a suburb of Seoul the South Korean capital. She has received many awards for her work including the National Award for Craft Art in 2005, which was awarded for a large ceramic sculpture - the size of a small car. Her pieces are held in collections across the UK, and within the USA.
With both of her parents being artists, Kerry’s childhood was surrounded by paintings, sculpture, and architecture. They had a potter friend and spent quiet hours in her studio. She went on to gain a BA Hons Ceramics at University of Westminster.
Kerry is inspired by the making process itself, using clay as a way of exploring her relationship to the world as a maker. She seeks creative strategies analogous to those found in nature such as growth, metamorphosis, and fragmentation.
John comes from a family of engineers going back several generations, so it was natural for him to follow suit. However, he made an unenthusiastic engineer, and after several years teaching he went back to college and gained a place on the 3D course at Manchester College of Art where he was introduced to clay for the first time.
David was born in 1943 in Lancashire, he trained at Flintshire Technical College, Wimbledon School of Art, and Stoke on Trent College of Art, studying under Derek Emms. After meeting and marrying Margaret, a fellow potter, they established their first workshop in 1963 in Denbigh, North Wales.
David’s work descends from the Leach and British Studio Pottery tradition, where the aesthetics and ideologies of the East and West ignited a new tradition of high fired ceramics. He makes large bottles, jars and platters with a base celadon glaze decorated with his personal style of hakeme, rope impress and waxed motifs under heavy reduction overglazes and combined with ashed surfaces.
Angela has been working in ceramics for over 50 years. Her first experience of clay was at after school class, leading to a Foundation Arts Course in Derby, then a BA in Wolverhampton, and an MA at Royal College of Art London. The latter two degree courses were very open-ended and encouraged exploration of other materials and a wide variety of working methods. This suited Angela as she has always been interested in both industrial production processes and sculptural techniques.
