All of our makers are members of the Craft Potters Association and each of them have a story to tell.
Marcio Mattos became fascinated with clay after seeing an exhibition of tea ceremony bowls at the V&A museum many years ago. He went on to train at Richmond College and later for a degree at Goldsmiths College. He presently creates one-off sculptural vessels and plaques in black stoneware and porcelain paper clay with dry-glazed textural surfaces and brushed decoration.
Irena Sibrijns has been a potter for over thirty years. Inspired by an avid interest in 20th century English decorative arts tradition Irena creates exquisite, and entirely unique, ornamental and functional pieces with equal enthusiasm.
Chris Keenan has been making pots for almost twenty-five years. Thrown and turned by hand on the wheel using Limoges porcelain, he specialises in pieces for interior spaces – designed for functional use and for decoration.
Rachel Grimshaw’s sculptural ceramics are about the clay itself. Focusing on its pliable, immediate, qualities, Rachel likens her pieces to photographs capturing a ‘frozen moment’ in time, her pieces are fixed in a forever gesture once fired.
Sue’s multidisciplinary conceptual practice comprises stand-alone pieces, installation, film and tableware, collectively defined by a distinct language. Current work is rooted in traditional techniques, thrown forms made on the wheel, firing in real flame kilns and using natural wood ash deposits and the reduction flame to add unpredictable embellishment.
Rachel studied Ceramics at Cardiff School of Art and Design, graduating in 2000. Inspired by the ever-changing colour and light within the landscape, Rachel combines artistic expression with traditional craft skills and an innovative decorating technique to create abstract compositions on a clay canvas.
