Landscape is pivotal to Sarah’s work, expressed in an oblique way. A distillation of her responses to the transient moments of mud and weather, sun, season and the clay in her hand. Like the changing weather, her approach constantly shifts as she explores shapes, colours, textures and markings.
Annabel was born in Germany and spent several years of her childhood in Egypt before coming to England in 1956. She discovered clay at Farnham Art School on Saturday morning classes in the early 1960s. After leaving school in 1967, she attended Winchester Art School, where she was introduced to conceptual art and concrete poetry, and then Croydon College of Art. She went on to gain a BA(Hons) in Sociology and a PhD in Lesbian History at Essex University, then introduced and taught Lesbian Studies at Birkbeck College for two years. In her early 40s, she returned to her first love of clay, as one of the initial students on the City Lit Ceramics Diploma course in 1989.
Jude undertook a foundation course at Somerset College of Art & Design, then gained a Dip. AD at Gloucester College of Art & Design in Fine Art (Sculpture with Painting). At art school, Jude worked mainly in bronze. She married John Jelfs in 1972 and became a potter. Jude and John live and work at the Cotswold Pottery, located in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, UK.
Jennifer Hall graduated from Cardiff Institute of Higher Education back in 1994, followed by work as a thrower and decorator for Gwili Pottery, Carmarthen. Jennifer set up her first pottery in 1997 in Buckinghamshire, later in 2001 she moved to Llanwrthwl, Powys to establish her successful studio.
Duncan’s fascination with clay began as a child in his parents’ garden. The colour, smell and malleability of the earth led him to discover at school the transformation of clay by heat into a permanent object. As a teenager, Duncan was captivated by seeing his teacher throwing a pot on a kick-wheel, his bedroom posters were images of communist revolutionary heroes and 20th-century studio pottery.
Kate studied 3D Design at the University of Brighton. After graduating, she participated in an international ceramic residency in Japan where she worked alongside established Japanese, Korean, and American artists. On her return, Kate set up her ceramic studio in London where she worked for nearly ten years. She now works from her garden studio in Kent making raku and stoneware pieces.
