Having grown up in East Germany, a spirit of friction and tension between perceived opposites informs much of Schneider’s work. Their punk-baroque sculptures operate at the margins of functionality and aesthetic convention, riding the boundary between binary opposites in ways that invite speculation and test both the powers of interpretation and the materiality of clay.
Schneider employs a broad palette of ceramic techniques to create collage-like works, emphasizing surface decoration through slip transfers and gold lustre accents. These are often juxtaposed with resin, steel constructions, glass, or found objects, reinforcing a sense of contrast and material tension.
Their recent work has focused on ‘pure’ porcelain assemblages, drawn from a collection of slip moulds developed over 25 years of making. Revisiting earlier forms and themes, they find new angles within this accumulated detritus, framing it as material that emerges From the Land of the Living.
