Tom makes pottery for use at the table, in the kitchen, and around the home, inspired by the ceremony of eating and drinking. He is continually fascinated by the tension between form and function, using glazes as ‘clothing’ to highlight strong, confident silhouettes. This approach originates in his studies under Steve Sheridan as a schoolboy and his enduring admiration for makers including Richard Batterham, David Leach, and Gwyn Hanssen Pigott.
The often-compelling requirement to compromise form in order to achieve function excites him. He makes useful, honest pots to enrich daily routines and elevate shared meals. In doing so, he strives to create robust yet refined ‘country’ pottery: vessels for purpose that owe their balance and feel to an enduring attention to form and shape, reflecting his deep commitment to the visual and tactile qualities of each piece.
He favours a narrow palette of subdued glazes, largely derived from foraged materials, applied carefully to enhance a pot’s utility and emphasise its shape and presence. Formative years in Dorset, followed by time spent living and working across Asia and the Middle East, continue to influence both the style of his work and his enduring desire to bring people together around a table.
