Ray Silverman

My life in clay began entirely by accident when I was a twelve-year-old accepted into the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. It was there that I had the immense fortune of learning under Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, and Colin Pearson. Their towering integrity and exacting standards shaped my hand forever.

Born in Hitchin in 1943, I formally trained at Camberwell from 1956 to 1964. I taught at Yeovil College of Art and set up a studio in East Chinnock, Somerset, before a formative period as a ceramic designer at Lapid Ceramic Works in Israel. Upon returning, I established a studio in Hornchurch, Essex, remaining a consultant for Lapid until 1986. I balanced my studio work with teaching as a lecturer at Goldsmiths College from 1980 to 1992 and chaired the London Potters for 10 years.

My work revolves mostly around thrown vessel forms, moving from early domestic ware to individual pieces in porcelain and stoneware in an oxidation or reduction atmosphere, focusing on complex oxidation glazes.

A Craft Potters Association member since 1962, my work has been exhibited internationally, including a proud milestone showing alongside my mentors Hans and Lucie at the Jewish Museum London 2016-2017.
