Regina Heinz

Originally trained in fine art in Vienna before studying ceramics in London, Regina Heinz was drawn to clay by its vibrancy of colour, the sensuality and tactility of the material, and the way clay responds to the movement of the hand. She sees her work as “three-dimensional painting”, exploring the relationship between form, surface and colour.

Inspired by the Austrian lake district where she grew up, Regina translates the flowing lines of water, landscape and natural patterns into softly undulating forms. Her abstract work explores form, volume, line, rhythm and colour, with carefully painted grid patterns and geometric designs combined with the random glaze effects created during firing. These elements come together in a distinctive interplay between structure, colour and texture.

Regina’s sculptural wall pieces are slip-cast before being meticulously hand-painted with intricate designs that echo, and sometimes contrast with, the undulating shape. She builds up layers of colour and texture using brushed glazes, ceramic pigments, transfers and gold enamels, applied in sequence and developed through multiple firings. The transfers are fired at high temperatures, causing them to begin breaking down and creating an additional graphic dimension, while gold enamels add sparkling highlights that contrast with the surrounding matt colours.

Regina seeks the perfect balance between spontaneity and precision, the organic and the architectural, and chance and control. Her softly undulating forms, layered painterly surfaces and abstract patterns aim to achieve a meditative quality and a sense of stillness.
