Gilles makes a variety of functional and one –off thrown stoneware pieces. His forms are freely manipulated on the potter’s wheel, some are altered and joined to construct taller larger pieces, other have incised marks applied to the soft clay revealing a subtle and tactile quality to the work, carrying a sense of captured sculptural movement.
He uses a range of stoneware clays as these textured clays contain a lot of natural impurities which adds an element of unpredictability to the surface effect and randomly interacts with the work. Gilles has always experimented with a range of surface decoration and the use of high fired glazes using brushes and trailing to produce a glaze on glaze effect.
Gilles studied ceramics at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London under Ian Auld and spent time assisting Janice Tchalenko then gained further workshop experience with the potter Eric Stockl. He established his own pottery workshop in Oxford and joined the CPA in 1987.
