Meet Our Makers

All of our makers are members of the Craft Potters Association and each of them have a story to tell.

John Dawson

John discovered ceramics while still at school in his native New Zealand. He was also inspired by watching a neighbour throwing a pot on the wheel and that cemented the desire to learn more.  After attending night classes to learn the basic, he built a kiln and shed in the back garden to continue making and experimenting.

Penny Fowler is a London based potter whose work reflects 21st century living in the capital. Using porcelain and bone china clays, her work is characterised by clean, precise lines and forms using a strong palette.

Ashley Howard

Ashley Howard creates porcelain vessels informed by Far-Eastern and homespun pottery traditions. His pieces draw from his interest in ritual vessels, the spaces they occupy and the ceremonies that surround them.

Paul Jackson

Paul studied studio ceramics under renowned ceramic sculptor, Mo Jupp at Harrow School of Art, graduating in 1977. Following a short period teaching in London, he relocated to Cornwall, where he established his pottery in 1979. He moved to his present home at Helland Bridge, where he works in a studio converted from an old chapel, in 1989.

Owen Thorpe

Since 2000 Owen Thorpe has been producing ‘families’ of pots using recurring themes and he has been making bowls and plates with inscriptions. All his work is made using a soft stoneware, high fired with occasional further enamel firings.
